Programatically login to website and download file

What should the request look like for that? Also, since this would be a file download request, wouldn't reading the page content of the response be inappropriate since I am not requesting a new page but rather a file to download. Well to download once again using your web browser login to the site. And upon the page where hyperlink to download the file is show stop there. No right click on hyperlink and click copy link location as it appears in my firefox and paste it into notepad. Now, in java program make a new HttpClient instance and call client. We are trying to automate download process. Plan is to handle login part with code and directly show list of filename to User with check box , so User can select files and click to save.
